James Gillese

As a lifelong paddler and guide I spend my summers on the water. I began my career as a contract canoe expedition guide for a couple of operations from 2002-2006 doing extended wilderness trips in northern Saskatchewan, Alberta and in the Yukon.

It was after completing the Guide program at Thompson River University in 2007 that I began working as a commercial rafting guide. In 2013 I purchased a small rafting company near Valemount, BC. I was the owner/operator and lead guide for 10 years.  A highlight of those years was opening The Dore River to commercial rafting in 2020.  Since 2023 I have been balancing a combination of local day guiding, expedition rafting and teaching Swiftwater courses. I have a passion for Swiftwater Rescue and I really enjoy passing along knowledge to new and returning students as they progress through their careers.

When the rivers are too low or frozen I can be found in Jasper, AB where I operate snowcats for the local ski resort. In my free time I enjoy rock climbing, ice climbing and skiing with my wife and 3 kids.
