Can I Rent Equipment Instead of Buying It?

‍What's Available to Rent

Rescue Canada's rental inventory covers the core equipment needed across our training environments. On the personal protective equipment side, that includes helmets, drysuits and semi-drysuits, personal flotation devices, boots, and neoprene gloves, the essential kit for anyone working in or near water. For rope and swiftwater-specific needs, we rent throwbags and belts along with line across kits. Ice environment work is covered through ice awls and ice cleats. And for helicopter operations, we offer flight helmets, survival vests, and flight suits available for rental as well.

Why Renting Makes Sense

Renting equipment solves a genuinely common problem. If you're registering for a Rescue Canada course and don't already own the required gear, buying a full equipment kit before you've even completed your first course is a significant commitment, especially if you're not yet certain this is a long-term direction for your work or recreation. Renting lets you show up properly equipped without that upfront investment.

The same logic applies well beyond course registration. A resource management crew that needs ice cleats for a defined field season doesn't necessarily need to own that equipment for the rest of the year. An organization that occasionally needs helicopter survival gear for a specific project doesn't need it sitting in storage between uses. Renting gives you access to properly maintained, reliable equipment exactly when your work requires it, without the ongoing responsibility of upkeep and storage.

Equipment You Can Trust

Rental gear from Rescue Canada isn't an afterthought inventory separate from what we use ourselves. It's maintained to the same standard as the equipment our own instructors rely on in the field, because rental equipment used in a course or on a job still has to perform exactly when it matters. We inspect and maintain rental gear on an ongoing basis, so what you receive is equipment you can genuinely trust, not simply whatever happens to be available.

Renting for a Rescue Canada Course

If you're renting equipment specifically for a course, timing matters. Get your rental request submitted well ahead of your course start date so we can confirm availability, prepare the equipment, and, if needed, arrange shipping in time for your session. Submitting rental requests early avoids unnecessary complications and makes sure you're properly equipped from day one of your training.

Renting for Work Outside of Training

If you need equipment for a task or job unrelated to a Rescue Canada course, whether that's a field assignment, a specific project, or a short-term operational need, our team can confirm availability and get the right gear to you based on your timeline. Give our office a call with what you need and when you need it, and we'll walk through the options.

Making the Call Between Renting and Buying

For students taking a single course or professionals with an occasional, defined need, renting is usually the more practical choice. For anyone working regularly in a given environment, whether that's a career in emergency services, ongoing resource management fieldwork, or a guiding business, purchasing your own equipment eventually becomes the more sensible long-term option, both for reliability and for the familiarity that comes with using your own gear consistently.

If you're not sure which makes more sense for your situation, our equipment team is glad to talk through your specific circumstances and help you land on the right approach, whether that's renting for now, buying outright, or a combination depending on what equipment you use often versus occasionally.

Guidance, Not Just a Gear Handoff

Renting rescue and safety equipment isn't like renting a generic tool for a weekend project, because getting the fit and function right actually matters to your safety in the field. Our rental process includes guidance from people who understand the equipment, not just a warehouse transaction. If you're unsure what size drysuit you need, which helmet suits your specific environment, or whether a particular item is even the right choice for the task you're describing, our team will walk through it with you before your gear ships.

That same standard applies whether you're renting a single helmet for a weekend course or outfitting a full crew for an extended field season. The goal is always the same: making sure what shows up at your door actually fits the work you're about to do.
